Celebrating Our 25th Year - ABOUT E.B.M.S.

Our Mission

The mission of East Boston Montessori School is to help children develop social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills in an environment that is child oriented, non-competitive and respectful of children and adults. These skills form the foundation that is necessary for future school years and lifetime growth.

The Montessori Method

“The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six.  For that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement is being formed.”  --Dr. Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

It is common knowledge that the first six years of life are extremely important.  It is during this time that a child becomes a member of a particular culture and family; learning its language, values, and attitudes.  A child who spends these formative years in an environment that is loving and supportive will learn to love her/himself and feel safe.

Our Montessori Classroom

“The child can only develop by means of experience in his environment.  We call such experience work.”  -- Dr. Maria Montessori

Dr. Montessori felt that the goal of early childhood education should not be to fill a child with facts but rather to allow a child to cultivate his/her own natural desire to learn.  In developing what she called “the prepared environment” each child is encouraged to learn spontaneously through self-directed activities that are maintained in an orderly, neat and attractive manner.

Multi-age Classroom:
Our classroom is made up of children ranging in ages from 2.9 to 6 years.  Multi-age grouping allows the opportunity for a more experienced child to mentor a younger classmate.  This not only reinforces the more experienced child’s own learning but also develops a sense of community and caring among the children.

Independence:
Our learning environment fosters independence for even the youngest children.  The environment is set up so that all materials are readily accessible and within easy reach.  Each child has the freedom to make choices and experience the feeling of pride and accomplishment at having completed a task on his/her own.

Individualization:
While we believe that children are naturally curious, each child develops at his/her own rate.  In a Montessori classroom, materials are hands-on and the teacher acts as a facilitator, presenting the materials and then allowing the child to explore and work at his/her own pace.  A Montessori classroom is rich in materials that encompass language, math, science, cultural studies, art and music.  Learning occurs in many ways:  alone, with a peer, with an adult or in a large group.  Our hope is to inspire lifelong learners who cultivate and recognize the importance of their role in society.
